I Am Not I

Inspirational Poetry Blog - The Pen & Camera - Molly Rees Photo - Black and White Documentary Childhood Photography - Portrait of girl with mud and princess tierra by M. Menschel - I am not I poem by Juan Ramon Jimenez

I am not I.
I am this one walking beside me whom I do not see,
whom at times I manage to visit,
and whom at other times I forget;
who remains calm and silent while I talk,
who forgives, sweet, when I hate,
who takes a walk when I am indoors,
and will remain standing when I die.

Messenger

Blog - The Pen & Camera - Inspirational, Poetry, Writing, Denver, Colorado - Molly Rees Photo - Black and White Documentary Childhood Photography - portrait of girl in summer shadow by M. Menschel Messenger poem by Mary Oliver

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird-
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old?  Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.

On Children

Blog - The Pen & Camera - Inspirational, Poetry, Spirituality, Writing, Denver, Colorado -  Molly Rees Photo - Black and White Documentary Childhood Photography - girl jumping on couch by M. Menschel "On Children," poem by Khalil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

-Khalil Gibran

Life will break you

Blog - The Pen & Camera - Poetry, Inspirational, Writing, Denver, Colorado -  Molly Rees Photo - Black and White Documentary Childhood Photography - boy with umbrella by M. Menschel "Life will break you" poem by Louise Erdrich

Life will break you.
Nobody can protect you from that,
and living alone won’t either,
for solitude will also break you
with its yearning.
You have to love. You have to feel.
It is the reason you are here on earth.
You are here to risk your heart.
You are here to be swallowed up.
And when it happens that you are broken,
or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near,
let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples
falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness.
Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.
